The Road is not your trash can

What causes people to throw trash and cigarette butts out their car window? Do they really want our neighbourhood to look like a dirty land fill?

I can’t think of any logical explanation as to why drivers toss garbage on roads, highway exits, and parking lots other then sheer laziness. Perhaps it was the beating I got as a kid when my father caught me throwing a Hubba Hubba wrapper out the window that knocked some sense into me.

But what’s with people these days? Can’t you wait till you get home to throw that big mac wrapper in the trash?

It’s like they don’t care about keeping the streets and city they live in clean. Well, maybe it’s about damn time I come to your house and dump all my garbage on your front lawn. Heck, maybe I’ll bring my dog and let him do his business too (okay i’m kidding…kind of).

Fact is garbage is all over the cities we live in and there’s no reason it needs to be. It’s on the side of our highways and roads. It’s in our lakes and rivers. It’s in our parks and soccer fields. It’s scattered across fast food parking lots. It’s probably even in your garden too.

Litter is everywhere we look, and it’s about time something is done about it.

Okay, I’ll admit it. I used to throw my apple cores out the car when nobody was looking. Sometimes I’d even have competitions with friends to see how far we could spit our gum out the window.

But I’m an adult now. And I try to act like one.

I was getting off the 403 at the Winston Churchill exit the other day. While waiting at the traffic lights a man in his mid 40’s rolled down his window and emptied out every single piece of garbage in his car onto the grass (already filled with glass bottles and cigarette packages). I’m talking coffee cups, pop cans, french fries containers and even an empty bag of Oreos. The light turned green and the man drove off as if his trash was some sort of fertilizer for the grass.

So I followed him.

At the next lights I pulled up beside him and rolled down my window.

Me: “Umm, excuse me Sir. I think you dropped something back there”.

The man looked at me like I was a three headed alien from Prometheus.

Him: “The fuck your problem man? This is Canada. I can do whatever I want to”

Me: “Well, actually you can’t. Littering is against the law here, sir. Can’t you wait to throw it out at home?”

Him: “What are you the litter police or something?”

The light turned green and the thought of throwing my half eaten frosty across the man’s windshield crossed my mind.

“Have a nice day sir” I yelled out the window as the grumpy old man chirped his tires speeding away from the intersection.

The point I am trying to make is that throwing any type of trash out of the window is simply inexcusable.

You’re getting out of the car sooner or later anyways, so why not dispose of it properly instead of tossing it on the road for someone else to clean up?

People who do this, with the “somebody else will take care of it” mentality, have no respect for themselves, other people’s property, and the environment.

And apparently in the year of 2017, people still need a reminder not to throw their junk out of a moving vehicle. Flying food at 80 kilometers per hour is surprisingly dangerous. Paper cups, fast food bags, and big mac containers flying out of car windows are like missiles sure to leave a bruise on cars behind you.

This includes smokers.

They’ll either flick the butts out the window of a moving car or come to an intersection and dump the ashtray right onto the ground.

Just look at left hand side of any intersection with a stoplight. You’ll find hundreds of cigarette butts left by smokers waiting to make a left turn.

In fact, you usually don’t have to walk far to find a cigarette butt on the road. A lot of people who do smoke toss the butt out the window when they are done. Not only is this an extreme fire hazard (the still lit orange guys that bounce off your windshield) and a filthy habit, it also contributes to the toxic chemicals that lead into our waterways.

Cigarette butts are the most abundant type of litter found in our roadways and are one of the deadliest forms of waste littered.

In fact, cigarette butts make up nearly 15 percent of all small litter items in Ontario.

For all the smokers reading this, enjoy your cigarette but think of others and respect the environment. Fires caused by discarded cigarettes results in millions of damages as well as the destruction of human life, wildlife, and ecosystems.

So please use your goddam ash tray.

The fact is we all suffer from these disgusting actions whenever we drive through the city. Throwing trash and cigarette butts out of the window of your car is about the stupidest thing you can do.

A city of Toronto bylaw already exists to punish those who choose to litter, fining offenders $365 who decide to “take out the trash” during their commute.

But bylaws like this are rarely enforced so until they are these pigs will continue to pollute our city, our air, and our neighbourhoods.

So the next time you see someone chucking trash or cigarette butts out the window, I have one simple suggestion.

SAY SOMETHING!

Make them feel guilty, call them out on it, and let them know that this is NOT acceptable. There’s a tiny chance you’ll knock some sense into them and make them change their filthy ways.

How to add Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) to a 2012 – 2015 Passat TDI

IMG_20160205_110053267_HDR

Diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) is composed of urea and de-ionised water and is injected into the exhaust gasses of many modern diesel engines.  DEF significantly reduces the amount of exhaust gas emissions and pollution by converting harmful nitrogen oxides into harmless nitrogen and steam.

Most vehicles equipped with DEF will have a dedicated tank that requires to be refilled at normal service intervals. The size of the tank is usually designed so that you should not have to refill the fluid in between services, however individual vehicle’s consumption may be higher depending on operating conditions. The vehicle will not operate unless there is sufficient fluid in the vehicle’s tank.

How to replace the cabin filter in a 2010-2014 VW Golf/GTI

257600_1783553274001_1394569205_31666802_1491698_o

The cabin filter in your car cleans the air that comes into the interior through the heating, ventilation and air conditioning system. If it’s dirty, dust, pollen and other airborne material can make riding in your car unpleasant, especially if you have allergies or other respiratory problems.

Recommendations on when it should be replaced vary by manufacturer — Volkswagen recommends replacing it every 20,000 miles or 2 years — however it may need to be changed earlier depending on how much you drive and where.

It’s time to start thinking about winter tires

c8eb23ff-b34b-47ad-b81d-76f3873f32f2

It’s that time of year again. The leaves are falling, the temperatures are dropping and snow is either here or on its way depending on where you live. And that means you should think about putting a set of winter tires on your car.

While some of us may think we can get around fine with “all season” tires, it’s like the equivalent of wearing Air Force 1’s in the winter – it might work for a while, but you’re bound to fall flat on your ass sooner or later.

Men more likely to die driving than women

Men are more likely to be killed while driving than women, a new U.S study shows.

The study, done by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), shows that twice as many men than women were killed while driving in 2012 in the U.S. (23,808 men compared to 9,733 women). The study reveals that this disparity is mostly due in part to the fact that they cover more miles each year.

My thoughts on Optimum Gloss-Coat

IMG_9733

Paint coatings are a relatively new concept to the automotive detailing market. Unlike traditional waxes and sealants which offer relatively short durability, paint coatings are designed to provide semi-permanent protection that can often last a year or longer. Much like a second clear coat, paint coatings function like an invisible barrier that shields your paint from the harsh elements your vehicle is constantly being exposed to. Additionally, automotive surfaces treated with these paint coatings are considerably easier to clean and maintain due to their self cleaning properties.

Protecting your cars finish in the winter

Toronto teen caught stunt driving Nissan GT-R at 240km/h

Capture

A Toronto teen is in trouble after being caught flexing the muscles of a black Nissan GT-R last Monday night.

According to Ontario Provincial Police, the teenager was travelling 140km/h over the speed limit on highway 407 near Weston road around 10:30 pm. The driver of the speeding vehicle,Vince Lisi, 18, of Kleinburg is facing rather serious charges that include stunt driving, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and failure to surrender a driver’s licence.

The stunt driving teenage driver has since had his Nissan GT-R impounded immediately and his licence suspended for seven days.

Just a few weeks before the incident Lisi posted a photo of his vehicle on Twitter followed by the comment “here come the speeding tickets”.

vincelisi

In Ontario, someone caught going 50 km/h or more over the limit by police faces an automatic six demerit points, road-side vehicle seizure and an immediate seven day licence suspension with additional suspension (of up to two years) upon conviction.

The 18-year-old driver can also face a fine between $2,000 to $10,000 – but something tells me it won’t be long before the reckless driver is back behind the wheel of the $100,000 supercar.

How to sell your car online, the right way

used-car-for-sale-red-truck

If you’ve ever searched for a used car online, you probably already know that the majority of people put very little thought into the ads they create.

The process for most typically consists of a five-minute photoshoot with a 1.3 megapixel camera phone, followed by a twenty-five word description in the form of one long run-on sentence.

But if you actually want to sell your car quickly and for the highest possible price, it’s going to take a little bit of planning and effort. Think of it this way though: that extra couple hours you spend taking good pictures and writing a detailed description will help your ad stand out from all the others.

All fuels are not created equally

Driver Filling Fuel Tank

Owning a vehicle ain’t cheap.

Car payments, insurance, gas, and regular maintenance all add up to thousands of dollars a year, whether you drive a fifteen-year-old Toyota or a brand new Mercedes Benz. So naturally, when your tank is empty, you search for the cheapest gas you can find – even if it means filling up at the same place you buy your eggs and toilet paper, or the no-name shack with a giant inflatable gorilla on the roof.

But do you ever worry that the cheap gas you put in your vehicle might someday mess up your engine?
