Truck driver charged with careless driving after Highway 401 rollover

Police have charged a 21-year-old truck driver with careless driving after dangerously rolling his tractor-trailer off a ramp and onto the Highway 401.

The crash, captured by a nearby vehicles dash-cam, shows the tractor-trailer moving southbound on the 404 towards the on-ramp to the westbound 401 before plunging onto the westbound lanes of the 401. The rig miraculously lands in an unoccupied space of the busy highway, ultimately striking two other vehicles before coming to a halt.

The accident blocked all west-bound traffic for 6 hours, but amazingly no one including the driver was seriously injured from the crash.

The driver, Mr. Sukhjitsingh, a 21-year-old man from Brampton, has been charged with careless driving according to Ontario Provincial Police and is scheduled to appear in court on May 5.

OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt told CTV News that the truck appeared to have been driving too fast for the Highway 404 ramp, where the posted speed limit is 50 km/h.

Perhaps many of us will, and with merit, question the skill level of the young driver operating such a large and potentially dangerous vehicle on a busy public highway. It is certainly possible that the driver lacked the experience necessary to safely maneuver a fully loaded transport truck.

Thankfully, as dash-cams become more and more commonplace, we can use them to give people a different perspective on the risks of dangerous driving, and in cases such as this, help provide supplementary evidence in the event of a crash. While these videos can be both entertaining and frightening in nature, they will likely continue to function as a self regulatory device that supports traffic safety.
