My thoughts on Optimum Gloss-Coat

Paint coatings are a relatively new concept to the automotive detailing market. Unlike traditional waxes and sealants which offer relatively short durability, paint coatings are designed to provide semi-permanent protection that can often last a year or longer. Much like a second clear coat, paint coatings function like an invisible barrier that shields your paint from the harsh elements your vehicle is constantly being exposed to. Additionally, automotive surfaces treated with these paint coatings are considerably easier to clean and maintain due to their self cleaning properties.

Formulated by award-winning Dr.David Ghodoussi, Optimum Gloss-Coat is the newest and most advanced coating system from Optimum Car Care .Optimum claims that Gloss-Coat provides better scratch resistance, UV resistance, chemical etch resistance and better release properties than any other consumer product while providing maximum gloss and slickness.

Because Optimum Gloss-Coat is semi permanent, the paint finish has to properly prepared before applying it. This means that the paint must be 100% clean and defect free because once applied, the coating can only be removed using abrasive compounds or polishes.

On this particular vehicle, a 2015 Volkswagen Passat, prep work included washing, claying, polishing and a final wipe down to ensure a 100% clean surface prior to application. Gloss-Coat was then applied in a thin layer one panel at a time. Once completed, the paint coating produced an intense level of gloss and clarity not even the most expensive waxes could rival.

But that’s not even the best part of this paint coating.

Once Optimum Gloss-Coat cures (which is about 24 hours), washing is the only maintenance needed to keep your vehicle looking fantastic. Unlike waxes and paint sealants that require frequent reapplication, Optimum Gloss-Coat provides constant, unyielding protection for up to two years.

Paint coatings, however, aren’t going to be for everyone. Initial costs will certainly be higher compared to traditional waxes, especially if you hire a professional detailer to install the coating (which I highly recommend). Some enthusiasts will likely still prefer the satisfaction (and sore arm) that comes from waxing a vehicle on a Sunday afternoon.

Yet it’s extremely hard to ignore the mass appeal of a product such as Gloss-Coat. Certainly many drivers will appreciate the increased durability of  paint coatings and minimal upkeep required to maintain their vehicles finish.
